How to Perform Umrah
A simple guide for first-time pilgrims
Enter Ihram
Before crossing the Miqat (designated boundary), enter the state of Ihram by performing ghusl, wearing Ihram garments, and making intention for Umrah.
- Men wear two white unstitched cloths
- Women wear normal modest clothing
Tawaf (7 Circles)
Upon reaching Masjid al-Haram, perform Tawaf by circling the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction, starting from the Black Stone corner.
- Start each round at the Black Stone
- Men should do Raml (brisk walking) in first 3 rounds
Pray 2 Rakah at Maqam Ibrahim
After completing Tawaf, pray two rakah behind Maqam Ibrahim (Station of Ibrahim), or anywhere in the mosque if crowded.
- Recite Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas
- Face the Kaaba
Sa'i (7 Walks)
Perform Sa'i by walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating Hajar's search for water.
- Start at Safa, end at Marwa
- Men should jog between green lights
Halq or Taqsir
Complete your Umrah by cutting your hair. Men should shave their head completely (Halq) or trim hair (Taqsir). Women trim a fingertip length.
- Halq is more rewarding for men
- Women should not shave their heads
What Our Pilgrims Say
"Alhamdulillah, our family's first Umrah was made so easy by OiO Travels. The hotels were exactly as described, just steps from the Haram. The UK team was available 24/7 and helped us throughout. Highly recommended!"
"I travelled solo as a sister and felt completely safe and supported. The visa processing was seamless, and the hotel in Madinah had the most beautiful view of Masjid Nabawi. Will definitely book again for my family."
"Third time booking with OiO for Umrah. The VIP package was worth every penny - the Clock Tower hotel is absolutely stunning, and the private guide made our Ziyarat tours so meaningful. JazakAllah khair!"
"We took our elderly parents on their first Umrah. The wheelchair assistance and special arrangements were perfect. The Standard package offered excellent value with 4-star hotels close to the Haram."

Yes! Since the new Saudi regulations introduced in 2021, women aged 18 and above can perform Umrah without a Mahram (male guardian). Women can travel solo or in all-female groups. We offer dedicated female group departures from UK cities.
The best times for UK travellers are: Ramadan (most spiritually rewarding but crowded), November-February (pleasant weather, school half-terms), and outside of Hajj season (Dhul Hijjah). Avoid summer months (June-August) due to extreme heat exceeding 45°C.
Direct flights to Jeddah are available from London Heathrow (LHR) via Saudi Arabian Airlines and British Airways. Other UK airports (Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh) connect via Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul with one stop.
Mandatory: Meningitis ACWY vaccination (required by Saudi authorities). Recommended: COVID-19 vaccine, flu vaccine, and routine UK vaccinations. Some pharmacies and travel clinics offer Umrah vaccination packages.
We recommend £50-100 per day for meals, drinks, and personal expenses if meals are not included. Budget extra for: shopping in Makkah/Madinah souks, Zamzam water containers, prayer items, and gifts. ATMs are widely available and accept UK cards.
Yes, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering: medical emergencies (Saudi healthcare is expensive), trip cancellation, lost luggage, and repatriation. Our VIP package includes insurance; other packages can add it for £35-50.
Yes! All our packages can be customized. We can add extra nights in Makkah, Madinah, or include stops in other cities. Many UK pilgrims extend their trip to visit historical sites in Madinah or relax in Jeddah before returning.
Our Ziyarat (religious site visits) include: In Makkah - Jabal Rahma (Mount Arafat), Muzdalifah, Mina, Jabal Thawr, birthplace of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In Madinah - Uhud, Quba Mosque, Qiblatain Mosque, Date farms. Tours have English-speaking guides.
Yes! We organise regular group departures from London, Manchester, Birmingham, and other UK cities. Groups travel together with an experienced UK tour leader who accompanies you throughout Umrah. Group departures offer great value and companionship.
Our cancellation policy: More than 30 days before departure - full refund minus admin fee (£100). 15-30 days - 50% refund. Less than 15 days - no refund. We recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation for peace of mind.
